Venu Vetrayan
Venu Vetrayan (Birth: October 30, 1978) is a modern Tamil poet. He writes poems as well as essays and critiques on poetry. He works as a doctor in Chennai and is the editor of the Poetry Section of the English weekly Southbound Review.
Birth, Education
Venu Vetrayan was born on October 30, 1978, in Mittahalli Pudur village, Krishnagiri district, to Vetrayan and Ranjitham. He completed his primary education at T. K. Sami Matriculation School in Krishnagiri and his higher secondary education at Holy Cross Matriculation School in Salem. He obtained his medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai.
Personal Life
Venu Vetrayan worked as a doctor on a ship for a brief period. He later returned to Chennai, where he continues to work as a doctor. He currently lives in Chennai with his sister's family.
Literary Life
Venu Vetrayan was introduced to literature through the Vishnupuram-Ooty Kaviya Mukaam. He has been writing poetry since 2014. His first collection of poems, Alagil Alagu, was published in 2019 by Virutcham Publications. He cites Devadevan and Pramil as his literary ideals.
He regularly writes essays on poetry for the online magazine Aru. Venu Vetrayan has been interested in painting since his school days.
Literary Place
Venu Vetrayan's poetic world stands beyond the worldly realm. His poems explore a universe beyond the ordinary and worldly concerns of human beings. In this sense, Venu Vetrayan regards Devadevan as his literary ideal.
"Venu Vetrayan's poems are characterized by a complete rejection of the worldly. They seek to move beyond fundamental desires, imagine a harmony with the universe, and pursue philosophical inquiries that transcend the individual. It is for this very reason that they stand outside the circle in which poetry is generally read and discussed here," observes writer Jeyamohan.
